Greetings from MHT!
Please join Mahila Housing Trust and Heriot-Watt University in a webinar to explore best practice for community-led COVID-19 responses, learning directly from on-the-ground efforts across India.
COVID-19 presents unique challenges for every community, particularly in informal settlements where following official recommendations is not always easy. Despite this, the work of Mahila Housing Trust has enabled agile and effective responses that support slum communities during this challenging time. Researchers at Heriot-Watt University have explored these responses with EAST (Event Analysis of Systemic Teamwork) to look at how different slum communities have tackled two issues – containing the spread of COVID-19, and food security – across eight Indian cities.
The EAST method examines social networks (who is working with who), information networks (what information is important to exchange), and task networks (what needs to be done) to identify patterns behind successful outcomes. As community members and practitioners, this helps us understand best practice for how community-based organisations can maximise resilience to unexpected events. As researchers, this study helps to understand what concepts like ‘social capital’ and ‘community resilience’ look like in the real world. Please join us to learn about early research results, and discuss the important role of social capital and community resilience for responding not only to the COVID-19 pandemic but also to a wide range of issues.
The Scottish Funding Council, awarded through Heriot-Watt University’s Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) to support multidisciplinary research partnerships addressing the challenges of developing countries, enabled this project.
